So what is Sound Design?

Sound Design is the informed awareness, selection and manipulation of all the sounds that the audience hear as part of a theatrical event. This is a huge field including selecting or composing music for use in a stage production, creating specific sound effects or working with live singers and musicians. It relies on an awareness of many things including dramaturgy, scenography and technical specifications.
So why use a Sound Designer?
Sound Design is one of the most progressive areas of theatre design at this time. More and more directors and producers are realising the power of well conceived, integrated sound and music for performance. Sound is being used earlier in the production process to inform and react to the work done in the rehearsal room. The more that sound design is recognised as an integral part of the design process of a production or event, the more effective it becomes.
